Your Go-To Guide for Cleaning Stainless Steel
Do you know how to clean stainless steel? Unlike iron in regular mild steel that easily corrodes (oxidises), stainless steel contains chromium and in the better grades nickel, which makes it much more corrosion resistant. However, just because it is highly resistant to rust and corrosion this does not mean that it is exempt from contamination. To get the best out of your stainless steel products it is important that you not only clean them regularly, but also clean them the correct way.
Three things can damage the passive layer of stainless steel and allow corrosion to take hold. These are:
1. Mechanical abrasion – Avoid using items that can deeply scratch the steel’s surface including steel wool, wire brushes and scrapers which allow environmental contaminants to settle and take hold.
2. Deposits of water – Water left sitting on the surface will leave water spots and contaminants in the water will break down the layer of protection. Food deposits can also break the layer of protection. Stainless steel needs oxygen to keep the passive layer active so anything preventing oxygen from reaching it will create a problem.
3. Chlorides – These can be found in water, food, table salt, but mainly found in household and industrial cleaners.
Your Guide to Cleaning Stainless Steel
Cleaning stainless steel is easy once you know how. Let us take a more detailed look at how to clean this metal.
Step 1: Correct Cleaning Tools
The correct cleaning tools for stainless steel are items such as soft clothes, microfibre, sponges and plastic pads. Avoid any form of a hard brush or wire, as this can damage the finish.
Step 2: Correct Cleaning Products
The best products for cleaning Stainless Steel are quite simply soap, or a mild detergent (such as SUNLIGHT LIQUID®) in warm water, applied with a soft cloth or synthetic sponge. AVOID bleaches and silver/brass cleaners at all costs. You can also get a stainless steel cleaner such a Tiara which Euro Steel stocks and supplies.
Step 3: Correct After-Care Cleaning
Once you have cleaned your stainless steel items, you need to rinse the area thoroughly with water. Allow the area to remain wet for a couple of minutes before draining it and drying it with a soft towel or cloth. Avoid leaving it wet after cleaning, as this can cause streaks and water stains. Think of stainless steel like the human skin – if scratched or dirty – clean it and it will heal itself.
